Verify an Algerian NIF
online
Paste a tax identification number below. The tool checks its format instantly, inside your browser, without sending the number anywhere. An Algerian NIF has 15 digits, or 20 digits for a secondary establishment. A format check catches the vast majority of typing and copy errors. To confirm that a NIF actually exists and which taxpayer it belongs to, one source alone is authoritative: the Directorate General of Taxes portal, linked directly under the tool.

Authenticate a NIF on the DGI portal
Our tool stops at format. Only the Directorate General of Taxes can confirm that a NIF exists and which taxpayer it is attached to. Its NIF authentication service is free and requires no account: you enter the number, the portal answers.

What this tool does
- It checks that the number contains digits only, and names the stray characters pasted in from a PDF or an email.
- It checks the length: 15 digits for a primary taxpayer, 20 digits for a secondary establishment.
- It tells you how many digits are missing or surplus, instead of showing a bare rejection.
- It tolerates spaces, dots and dashes, and converts Arabic numerals to Latin digits.
- It runs entirely in your browser. The number you type never leaves your device.
What this tool does not do
- It does not confirm that a NIF is registered with the tax administration.
- It does not tell you which company or person a number belongs to.
- It does not report whether the taxpayer is active, struck off or compliant.
- It does not recompute the control key: the DGI does not publish the algorithm behind it, so no offline tool can audit it honestly.
- It replaces neither the tax registration certificate nor a check on the official portal.
The structure of an Algerian NIF
Here is what is actually documented. We stop where the official documentation stops, because the rest circulates online without a verifiable source.
- 15 digits
- The standard format, the one printed on the tax registration certificate of individuals and companies alike.
- 20 digits
- The number extends to 20 positions to register a secondary entity: a unit, secondary establishment or branch, each treated as a taxpayer in its own right. This is the format the ALCES customs system requires from importers.
- Digits only
- No letters, no country prefix. The official DGI form itself blocks any non-numeric input.
- Permanent
- The NIF does not change when the taxpayer moves or converts to another legal form. It follows the taxpayer for their whole fiscal life.
- Block ordering
- Specialist publications describe a number that opens with the territorial tax attachment, continues with a sequential number issued by the tax office, and ends with a control key. The DGI publishes neither the exact width of those blocks nor the key calculation. That is why our tool groups digits in fives for readability only, without pretending to attach official meaning to them.
When to verify someone else's NIF
The NIF is mandatory on every invoice. A wrong number is not a clerical detail: it undermines the deductibility of the expense and can get a transaction rejected.
- 1
Before paying a first supplier invoice
A missing or improbable NIF on an invoice is the most common red flag. Check the format, then authenticate the number on the portal before you pay.
- 2
When opening a customer or supplier account
Record a checked NIF the moment you create the third-party record. Fixing a master file after three hundred entries costs vastly more.
- 3
Before any foreign trade operation
Bank domiciliation and customs clearance both rely on the NIF. An error blocks the goods, not just the bookkeeping.
- 4
For public tenders
Bid files require the tax registration certificate. A single mistyped digit is enough to have an offer set aside.
- 5
Before signing a subcontracting agreement
You want proof that the subcontractor has a declared tax existence, not just a commercial registry entry.
You do not have a NIF yet?
These are two different needs. Verifying an existing number happens here and on the DGI portal. Obtaining your own NIF requires a declaration of existence at your tax office, with a file that depends on your legal form. Our guide covers the full procedure, the documents required and the timelines.

The NIF is issued after registration with the commercial registry. UpGrowth Connect handles the whole chain: articles of association, commercial registry, NIF and domiciliation, with a single point of contact.

Can you verify an Algerian NIF online for free?
Yes. The Directorate General of Taxes provides a free NIF authentication service on nifenligne.mf.gov.dz, with no account needed. Our tool works upstream: it checks the format in your browser so you do not query the portal with a mistyped number.
Does this tool confirm a NIF is valid with the tax office?
No, and no independent tool can. We only verify that the number has the shape of a NIF: digits only, and 15 or 20 positions. Only the DGI holds the taxpayer file and can confirm that a number exists and who it belongs to. That is why the link to its portal sits directly under the tool.
How many digits does an Algerian NIF have?
15 digits in the standard case. The number extends to 20 digits when it registers a secondary entity, meaning a unit, secondary establishment or branch, each treated as a separate taxpayer. The 20 digit format is also what the ALCES customs system requires for imports.
Is there a control key that can be checked offline?
Public descriptions mention a control key at the end of the number, but the DGI publishes neither the algorithm that computes it nor the exact block widths. Any tool claiming to validate an Algerian NIF mathematically without querying the administration is therefore inventing its answer. We prefer to check what is verifiable and send you to the official source for the rest.
A supplier's NIF returns nothing on the official portal, what now?
First re-check the input with the tool above: a missing digit is by far the most common cause. If the format is correct and the portal still returns nothing, ask the supplier for a copy of their tax registration certificate. A compliant business provides it without difficulty. A refusal or an unexplained delay justifies holding payment.
What is the difference between the NIF and the NIS?
The NIF is issued by the Directorate General of Taxes and identifies the taxpayer. The NIS, the statistical identification number, is issued by the National Statistics Office and serves statistical monitoring of activity. Both appear on your invoices, but they come from different administrations and are not verified in the same place.
